Your Best Ever Year? Ask Yourself THIS One Big Question – #0023

It’s goal setting season. I have a big email planned for you all next week with my exact goal setting process, one that I have been following (and tweaking) for over 20 years now. I hope you find it useful. It’s been my personal framework for how I have lived my life and ensure I finish one year much further down the road by the time the Christmas tree goes up, compared to when it was taken down a year before.
This week however, I want to highlight something I started putting into my goal setting process about 5 or 6 years ago. I picked it up from a coach of mine. I feel it’s so simple but so very effective, it deserved a WINMAIL all of its own.
When setting a vision for your life, goals and actions to help you achieve it, we all think about what we need to do in order to hit our objectives.
But something I don’t think is talked about enough is this question:

Ask Yourself:

What is the one thing that will stop me achieving my goals next year?

Reversing the usual line of thinking from what do I need to do, let’s consider what you don’t need to do, or more commonly stop doing. When you ask yourself this question, something (one big thing) instantly springs to mind doesn’t it. Now, this could be a habit, a belief, a routine….or as has been my case in the past, a person. Don’t ignore the first thing that springs to mind. It could be where you live, the fact you spend 3 days a week either drinking or hungover, or the person you are in a relationship with. Only YOU know the one thing, the main thing in the way.

Why one thing?

You could be thinking of 3 or 4 things that could stop you fulfilling your true potential. I know I did initially. But…by naming one, the biggest one, you won’t feel as overwhelmed by putting a plan in place to remove that single obstacle from your life. If you dedicate yourself to this process for let’s, say 5 years, you will have removed 5 big road blocks, one manageable one at a time. One thing, one focus, one removal.
With 6 weeks of the year left. Maybe it’s time to deal with that ONE thing before the new year. By clearing what is the main obstacle to you having your best ever year now, the road will be that much more clear in January.

But It’s Christmas…

There is never a good time to deal with harsh realities, a friendship, relationship or habit that is not just no longer serving you, but actually STOPPING you from becoming the person you COULD be.
Something to think about? Something to ACT on.
Let’s win, together.
